College Park, MD- April 4, 2016— At the start of 2016, Optimal began its annual walk fit challengea competition between teams of employees in and out of the office to see which team can accumulate the most steps before reaching our destination. This year, Optimal’s goal was to have a grand office total of 5,913,600 steps in order to “walk” to San Francisco, CA. Each team member’s total steps are reported each week over a five-week period using pedometers. In the past, the winning team members all received Fitbit watches, but this year the Optimal staff had something better in mind.

In April 2014, the water source in Flint, MI was contaminated with lead creating a public health danger. The corrosive Flint River water caused lead from aging pipes to leak into the water supply. Between 6,000 and 12,000 children in Flint have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead and these children and the rest of the population may experience a range of serious health problems. In light of the recent water crisis in Flint, the winning team members will use the money originally for the Fitbits watches to help the people of Flint. Optimal has purchased water filters through The United Way of Genesee County to provide families with extra security with their water at home.

Optimal will relaunch its Walk Fit Challenge in April 2016 and walk another 5,913,600 steps from San Francisco, CA back to College Park, MD and the winning team will receive Fitbit watches!
